Ladybird Books Home by Series

Most would agree that Ladybird books are timeless. Nearly all children’s bookshelves contained one or more of these delightful little books, whether it was 50 years ago or just 5 years ago.

Although Wills & Hepworth started producing books during the First World War and chose the motif of a Ladybird to advertise the books, it was not until the Second World War that due to a paper shortage the books were reduced in size to the format of 7 x 4.5”. This format became very popular and also economic, allowing the books to be sold at a mere 2/6. The books were designed to be ‘pure and healthy literature’ for children. This goal was definitely achieved! After the popularity of the first series, starting with ‘Bunnikin’s Picnic Party’, Wills & Hepworth decided to not only produce story books for children, but also educational books for children, including the topics of history, nature and religion. The books have since been reprinted and translated for many generations and cultures to enjoy!
